Feeding a child or adult via g-tube for medical reasons can be quite expensive.
Here’s an easy way I’ve made a cheap meal with very little fuss for your g-tube fed person.
Take one or two (depending on the calories you need) packages of Ramen noodles and put in a bowl with 1 – 2 cups of lukewarm water for 30 minutes. Blend and feed. To increase calories, add 1 – 2 Tablespoons of oil – olive is my preference.
Why lukewarm water? When I cook pasta to feed via g-tube, it takes a long time to heat the water, cook the pasta and cool it back down. The cooler it gets, the thicker it gets. Yet I cannot feed it when it is too hot as that could burn her stomach. When I soak it in lukewarm water there is no thickening process during the transition from hot to warm/cool. The pasta doesn’t get as thick – probably not as much starch released from the pasta?
The packages I buy are 190 calories per package. 2 packages and 2 Tablespoons of olive oil bring the total calories to 620. The total water can be reduced somewhat after soaking in order to achieve the correct total volume. Remember to blend on low for a minute or two to get the air bubbles out and reduce the total volume and keep the calorie count high enough for your needs.
Another thought: after eating a meal of only starch, it is common to get hungry again very soon. So I toss in a handful of edamame (soy beans) which blends up nicely, adds protein and makes the meal more nutritious.
About 75 cents for this meal by my calculations!
